Ruby
Overview
Ruby is the red variety of corundum, the same mineral as sapphire. Its color comes from chromium, which also makes many rubies glow red under ultraviolet light. That glow is part of why the finest rubies seem to burn with an inner fire.
Large, clean rubies with a pure, intense red are rarer than diamonds of the same size, and the finest examples rank among the most valuable gems in the world.
Origins
For centuries, the Mogok Valley in Myanmar produced the most admired rubies. Mozambique has become one of the most important modern sources, alongside Thailand and Sri Lanka.
